Cafwyd y syniad i gael man cyfarfod yn y pentref gan ddynion ifanc Rhiwlas yn fuan ar ôl diwedd y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf (1914 – 1918). Llogwyd tŷ yn ymyl y Post gyda’r dynion ifanc yn treulio eu horiau hamdden yno yn chwarae billiards a gemau eraill.
Gyda llwyddiant y fenter, datblygodd y syniad i fentro adeiladu safle pwrpasol a ffurfiwyd pwyllgor er mwyn codi neuadd. Codwyd arian drwy roddion a benthyciadau di-log a chafwyd les ar ddarn o dir gan Stad y Faenol. Yn eu horiau hamdden bu i’r dynion ifanc glirio’r tir yn barod ar gyfer yr adeiladu, gwaith a gymerodd 2 flynedd i’w gwblhau.
Cychwynnwyd yr adeiladu yn 1926 gyda Mr Robert R. Pritchard oedd yn byw yn 8, Carreg y Gath yn gyfrifol am y gwaith. Agorwyd y neuadd yn swyddogol gyda chyngerdd mawreddog nos Sadwrn, Medi 3ydd, 1927.
Ar y cychwyn tynnwyd allan gyfres o reolau megis:
Dim diod feddwol o fewn y muriau,
Dim agor ar y Sul,
Dim dawns i’w chynnal.
Mae’r adeilad presennol wedi ei adeiladu ar safle’r hen neuadd ac fe’i hagorwyd yn y flwyddyn 2,000 ar ôl ennill grant gan y Loteri Genedlaethol.
Pan ddymchwelwyd yr hen adeilad cafwyd hyd i baced sigaréts ‘Westminster Gold Tip’ oddi tan y llawr. Ar y paced sigaréts roedd y geiriau canlynol:
‘This building was built by R.R. Pritchard, Joiner in the year 1926-27’
HISTORY OF RHIWLAS VILLAGE HALL (est 1926)
Young men had the idea of having a meeting place in the village soon after the end of the First World War (1914-1918). A house near the Post was rented and the young men spent their free time there playing billiards and other games.
As the enterprise was a success, an idea developed that they would venture to build a suitable place to meet and a committee was formed. Money was raised through donations and interest free loans and a lease on a piece of land was acquired from the Vaynol Estate. During their free time, the young men cleared the site ready for building, work that took 2 years to complete.
Building work began in 1926 with Mr Robert R Pritchard who lived at 8, Carreg y Gath responsible for the work. The hall was opened officially with a Grand Concert on Saturday, September 3rd, 1927.
At the beginning a list of rules were drawn such as:
No alcohol inside the walls,
No Sunday opening,
No dances to be held.
The present building is built on the site of the old hall which was opened in the year 2,000 after a successful bid for National Lottery funding.
When the old building was demolished a ‘Westminster Gold Tip’ cigarette packet was found under the floor. Written on the cigarette packet was the following line:
‘This building was built by R.R. Pritchard, Joiner in the year 1926-27’
